Engine Torque Calculator

Calculate engine torque from horsepower and RPM, or estimate wheel torque using gear ratios.

Enter the engine's horsepower.
Enter the RPM at which horsepower is measured.
Enter the engine's torque output.
Enter the current gear ratio (e.g., 3.23).
Enter the final drive/differential ratio.
Typical values: FWD: 85-90%, RWD: 80-85%, AWD/4WD: 75-80%

Torque Calculation Tips

  • Torque (lb-ft) = Horsepower × 5,252 ÷ RPM
  • 1 lb-ft = 1.356 Nm (Newton meters)
  • Wheel torque = Engine torque × Gear ratio × Final drive ratio × Drivetrain efficiency
  • Higher gear ratios provide more torque multiplication but lower top speed
  • Peak torque and peak horsepower typically occur at different RPM ranges
  • Wheel torque is what actually moves your vehicle and determines acceleration potential
